PBIS

Greetings!  I am Ms. Keiandra Smart and I serve as the PBIS coordinator at LCES.  Goal 3 of Leflore County Elementary School is to create and maintain an environment that is safe and conducive for learning. To ensure this goal is met, we have implemented school-wide PBIS. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, which stems from the 1997 amendment to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The purpose of school-wide PBIS is to establish a way to create a positive school culture based upon readiness, responsible, and respect. PBIS seeks to reduce or eliminate poor behavior school-wide through the encouragement of positive behaviors.  PBIS is used school-wide because students deserve to attend a school that promotes school spirit and a sense of community. School-wide PBIS is not just a reward system, discipline system, quick fix, or ignoring inappropriate behavior. School-wide PBIS has benefits such as:

  • Improves school culture
  • Builds social skills
  • Reduces office discipline referrals
  • Reduces suspensions
  • Increases instructional time
  • Improves social and emotional development
  • Improves school safety
  • Increases student engagement
  • Improves academic performance
  • Increases family involvement
  • Improves faculty retention
  • Improves classroom management

Incentives or tiger bucks will be given when “pawsitive behavior” is displayed. Students will have the opportunity to visit the PBIS store using their tiger bucks. PBIS is implemented to ensure students are more productive, teachers are happier, and the community benefits. In addition, PBIS allows educators to do more of what they love at LCES- teach!
